Every New Yorker knows Trader Joe’s.
Not only is it a hip, healthy grocery store with a cult following, but it’s also one of the most affordable grocers in Manhattan. Yes, the wrap-around checkout lines that often snake through the store during peak times are intimidating at first, but once you master the art of in-line shopping, you can check off half your grocery list in the 10-20 minutes it takes to get to the cashiers. Plus, all the employees are generally smiley, happy to be there and willing to help, so that’s always refreshing.
This week is the beginning of finals at my school, so I know the feeling of not having enough time in the mere 9 hours of sunlight we get in December to go outside and get all your work done and make plans with friends before Christmas break, much less leisurely explore the city while consuming high end foreign chocolates. So when and how can you get that chocolate fix? Sure, Hershey’s kisses or Ghirardelli bars are great for a hurried pre-study session run to Duane Reade (non-New Yorkers: think CVS, but everywhere and with a couple more food aisles). But Trader Joe’s has Duane Reade beat with their quality chocolate and affordable prices. (Ghirardelli, I still love you.)
So here are my three wallet-friendly favorite chocolate products from Trader Joe’s:
1. For the daily snack: Dark Chocolate Powerberries
I always have these stocked in my apartment. Sweet-tart jellied pieces of açai, blueberry, cranberry and pomegranate juice covered in dark chocolate. The perfect midday chocolate fix or study snack. Eat in moderation. Get some for your own stash for $3.49.
2. For the fireside (real or Netflix version) evenings:
Organic Hot Cocoa Mix
This is the best instant hot chocolate mix I’ve ever had. Hands down. Try it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. Get a box of ten packets for $3.29.
3. For the Christmas party or special occasion: Cocoa Truffles
Whether your special occasion comprises of a whole houseful of people, or just you and your cat, these Canadian made truffles will be the highlight of the dessert table. Made according to a 50+ year old French recipe, these truffles literally melt in your mouth. Plus, at $2.99 a box, these truffles cost less than a Starbucks latte.
